I am thrilled! This thriller kept me gripped from the first to the last page and lifted the main figure and her way of handling things to a new level. To be honest, the scenes between Heloise and Erik are the best here *smile*

Story
Heloise’s relationship with Martin isn´t going too well. He wants a life with her, even talks about marriage is on the table now. Nothing, Heloise wants. She defines herself through her work and her best friend. But being married herself, or having kids of her own? No thank you. When she gets involved by accident in one of Erik Schäfer´s new cases, a missing boy, she knows that something isn´t right. All the information they gather doesn´t fit together and Heloise starts to ask questions. Questions not everybody likes. Questions that also force her to take a closer look at her own past and present.
Style
The plot is about addiction, PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder), and child abuse. All that is woven together into a great story that gives you an impression of real police work. The author draws a picture that is not always pleasing but is important for the plot itself. Short descriptions, sometimes only hinted at scenarios and encounters, draw the reader further and further into the thriller and its characters.
There are a lot of inconsistencies, outside pressure, and one main character struggling with their own problems. Because since Heloise knew what really happened to her father, her personal life has been turned upside down. It questions everything and that has sometimes very unpleasant consequences.
This time the author skillfully builds up the suspense with alternating scenes and sometimes longer and sometimes shorter chapters. The tension remains right from the start and more and more you get an idea of what the real secret behind it all could be. But I wasn´t sure until towards the end when there was a scene between Heloise and another character that confirmed some assumptions, but still left the question of a solution unanswered. That was exciting.
Characters
The way Erik treats Heloise talks to her and cares for her is beautifully portrayed here. Especially towards the end of the book, there are scenes and dialogues between the two of them where I couldn´t stop smiling while reading. It was just too delicious how the two behaved.
Heloise is a woman with a past. And her past burdens her and makes many things impossible for her. Especially since she knows the truth about her dead father. If she didn´t have her best friend, with whom she can exchange ideas, again and again, she would have long been an emotional wreck. What I liked about the protagonist is the fact that she is very smart without bragging about it or holding it in front of everyone. She thinks first before she acts. She doesn´t just see one side and works by feeling. Even in those moments when she doesn´t trust her instincts. Unfortunately, Heloise firmly believes that she is not worth being a mother because of her genes. That marriage is out of the question for her, no matter with whom. She defines herself through her job. There is no place for a man or a future with a husband.
Conclusion
A thriller that I can only recommend to everyone. This is absolute reading pleasure, and the Scandinavian touch rounds off the reading experience. The further development of the two characters also completes the great plot. I am excited to see how things will go on with Heloise and Erik.

Die Geschichte handelt von Sucht, PTBS (Posttraumatische Belastungsstörung) und Kindesmisshandlung. All das ist zu einer großartigen Geschichte verwoben, die einen Eindruck von der echten Polizeiarbeit vermittelt. Dabei zeichnet die Autorin ein Bild, dass nicht immer gefällt, für die Handlung selbst aber wichtig ist. Kurze Beschreibungen, teilweise nur angedeutete Szenarien und Begegnungen ziehen den Leser immer weiter in den Thriller und seine Figuren.
Es gibt viele Ungereimtheiten, Druck von außen und eine Hauptfigur, die mit ihren eigenen Problemen zu kämpfen hat. Denn seit Heloise weiß, was wirklich mit ihrem Vater geschah, steht ihr persönliches Leben Kopf. Sie stellt alles in Frage und das hat teilweise sehr unschöne Konsequenzen.
Den Spannungsbogen baut die Autorin diesmal durch abwechselnde Szenen und mal längere und mal kürzere Kapitel geschickt auf. Da bleibt die Spannung von Anfang an erhalten und mehr und mehr bekommt man als Leser eine Ahnung, was das eigentliche Geheimnis hinter allem sein könnte. Sicher war ich mir aber erst gegen Ende, als es zu einer Szene zwischen Heloise und einer anderen Figur kam, die einige Vermutungen zwar bestätigte, aber die Frage nach einer Lösung immer noch offenließ. Das war absolut spannend.
Charaktere
Die Art wie Erik mit Heloise umgeht, mit ihr spricht und sich um sie sorgt, ist hier wunderschön dargestellt. Vor allem gegen Ende des Buches gibt es Szenen und Dialoge zwischen den beiden, wo ich aus dem Schmunzeln beim Lesen nicht mehr herauskam. Es war einfach zu köstlich wie sich die beiden verhalten haben.
Heloise ist eine Frau mit Vergangenheit. Und ihre Vergangenheit belastet sie und macht ihr vieles unmöglich. Zumal sie die Wahrheit über ihren toten Vater kennt. Hätte sie nicht ihre beste Freundin, mit der sie sich immer wieder austauschen kann, wäre sie längst ein emotionales Wrack. Was mir an der Protagonistin gefiel, ist die Tatsache, dass sie sehr klug ist, ohne damit zu prahlen oder es jedem vor die Nase zu halten. Sie denkt zuerst, bevor sie handelt. Sie sieht nicht nur eine Seite und arbeitet nach Gefühl. Auch in diesen Momenten, in denen sie ihren Instinkten nicht traut. Leider ist Heloise fest davon überzeugt, dass sie es nicht wert ist, eine Mutter zu sein aufgrund ihrer Gene. Dass für sie eine Heirat nicht in Frage kommt, egal mit wem. Sie definiert sich über ihren Job. Es gibt keinen Platz für einen Mann oder eine Zukunft mit einem Ehemann.
Resultat
Ein Thriller den ich nur jedem empfehlen kann. Das hier ist absolutes Lesevergnügen und der skandinavische Touch rundet das Leseerlebnis ab. Die Weiterentwicklung zweier Figuren vervollständigt den großartigen Plot zusätzlich. Ich bin gespannt, wie es mit Heloise und Erik weiter gehen wird.
