Even though I would have liked to shake Mac´s mother, I found her an extremely profitable splash of color in this witty-ironic to dripping sarcastic plot. I have seen her in front of me, so delicious was Mac´s mother in her behavior and way of looking at things.

But one day, her order will be shaken up by Carter, a former schoolmate. Mac experiences a roller coaster of emotions and panics as she realizes it´s different this time. And so, does some ice cream pack the round before Mac realizes what she wants and is willing to risk something.
Style
Extremely humorous, with much wit and charm is the first part of the Bride Quartet series written by Nora Roberts. Ready-to-play dialogues, which spray with esprit and wit, and laughing funny scenes alternate with family dramas that not only reflect the unbelievably cold family life of the protagonist but also show how a truly lovingly functioning family can be.
Nora Roberts has written down these contrasts of icy coldness, culminating in an incredible mother-daughter scene with almost boundless ignorance by the mother towards the daughter, which is a wonderful composition of easy conversations and great emotions. Compared to the other novels of the author, apart from her In Death series, here is a slightly different tone and writing style noticeable, which is extremely small. On the one hand, the writing style is softer, but on the other hand more direct.
Characters
Mac is a protagonist who first has to experience and get to know her own value as a human being. She is so tired of constantly being subjected to her mother´s emotional manipulation as she fancies that after a renewed mother-daughter confrontation, she decides it must come to an end. With the moral support of her friends, Mac makes an incredible inner change and proves strength and assertiveness that you would not believe at first glance.
Mac´s mother is a wonderfully designed character, full of funny tragedy, and incredibly dramatic. She is so insane in her appearance and thus seems so incredibly believable, almost lovingly helpless – if it were not for the icy and calculating charisma that flashes through again and again.
In general, I found it immensely exciting to see the individual figures act. To see the different characters and idiosyncrasies and their effects on the plot.
Conclusion
I have rarely had such a delicious reading experience and often thought that seems somehow familiar to me. Great drama, great humor, and a protagonist that is fascinating. A really successful book about love, friendship, and what family should be. For anyone looking for a relaxing yet engaging reading experience, this novel is just the ticket.
