I am disappointed. By the cover, the story, and the author. This novel is, no doubt, a solid written one. But if you are looking for some depth or fun between the lines, look somewhere else. A shallow, glamour world is everything you will see here. Rich kids who try to play Adults, and fail miserably.

Story

Beatrice is supposed to marry. Not the man she loves and for sure not somewhen in the future. No. The perfect fairy tale wedding is supposed to happen very soon. With a man, she can choose from a list of twelve candidates her parents have chosen for her. But the moment she meets Theodore, she knows that he will never be the man of her dreams. He is perfect for her in other ways. Because he knows what she needs and when she needs it, concerning her public life.

Style

Unfortunately, the initial humor that the author kept flashing throughout the story didn´t last. There´s a layer of society on display that´s either borrowed from Gossip Girl or just bears a striking resemblance to it. Or why should it be of interest that a young girl is trying so hard to be something she is not and will literally stop at nothing for the title of a princess?

Katharine McGee has a simple, clear style of writing. But that in no way hides the fact that a character in this novel does literally everything to get to the goal of their desire. With a few words, the author has built a world that is the complete opposite of what the US is in reality. Superficial appearances are everything here. Glamour, glitter, and a façade that hides how the individual characters really are. Parents who don´t really listen when their children are talking to them. Those who don´t want to believe or don´t see what they can and can´t do. And if you look closely, you can see certain similarities with the British royal family. At least as far as the preservation of traditions is concerned. Except these have a positive edge in England, while in this novel they are clearly described as tiresome and annoying.

Characters

With her characters, the author partly reminded me of the fairy tale of Cinderella and the TV series Gossip Girl. And why everything at court is literally smothered in stiff traditions and a future monarch, whether male or female has to enter into an arranged marriage just to be able to serve his country, that didn´t open up to me to the end.

Beatrice, the heir to the throne, is determined by others from the start. She is neither allowed to marry the love of her life nor decide for herself what she does, says, or thinks when. Her life is a series of rigid protocols and traditions that she either doesn´t like or just finds boring. With her, I asked myself from the start whether she can even think for herself, even though she is portrayed as an extremely intelligent young woman. An outspoken beauty, but for me personally a pale protagonist.

Her younger brother Jeff is an outspoken charmer. A slightly mischievous smile and the woman´s world are at his feet. He can do whatever he wants, everything will be forgiven him. But when it comes to showing backbone, having your own opinion, and sometimes getting involved in a heated debate, then you don´t see anything of the pretty boy anymore.

Conclusion

A solid novel, which unfortunately didn´t quite convince me. On the one hand, this story has a nice pinch of humor, but on the other hand, there is also stiffness in terms of some characters and parts of the plot, which at some point just annoyed me. I definitely expected more from this novel.

Der anfängliche Humor, den die Autorin immer wieder in der Geschichte aufblitzen ließ, war leider nicht von Dauer. Da wird eine Schicht in der Gesellschaft zur Schau gestellt, die entweder von der Serie Gossip Girl abgekupfert ist oder nur eine frappierende Ähnlichkeit mit dieser hat. Oder warum sollte es von Interesse sein, das ein junges Mädchen mit aller Macht versucht, etwas zu sein, was sie nicht ist und für den Titel Prinzessin buchstäblich über Leichen geht?

Katharine McGee hat einen einfachen, klaren Schreibstil. Der aber keinesfalls verdeckt, dass eine Figur in diesem Roman buchstäblich alles tut, um an das Ziel ihrer Begierde zu gelangen. Mit wenigen Worten hat die Autorin eine Welt aufgebaut, die das komplette Gegenteil von dem darstellt, was die USA in der Realität sind. Oberflächlicher Schein ist hier alles. Glamour, Glitzer und eine Fassade, die verdeckt, wie es wirklich um die einzelnen Figuren steht. Eltern, die nicht richtig hinhören, wenn ihre Kinder mit ihnen reden. Die nicht wahrhaben wollen oder nicht sehen, was diese können und was nicht. Und wenn man genau hinschaut, erkennt man gewisse Ähnlichkeiten mit der britischen Königsfamilie. Zumindest was die Bewahrung der Traditionen angeht. Nur das diese in England einen positiven Touch haben, während sie in diesem Roman klar als lästig und nervig beschrieben werden.

Charaktere

Mit ihren Figuren hat mich die Autorin teilweise an das Märchen vom Aschenbrödel sowie die TV-Serie Gossip Girl erinnert. Und warum am Hofe alles in steifen Traditionen buchstäblich erstickt und ein zukünftiger Monarch, egal ob männlich oder weiblich, eine arrangierte Ehe eingehen muss, nur um seinem Land dienen zu können, das hat sich mir bis zum Ende nicht erschlossen.

Beatrice, die Thronerbin, ist fremdbestimmt von Anfang an. Sie darf weder ihre große Liebe heiraten noch selbst bestimmen, was sie wann tut, sagt oder denkt. Ihr Leben ist eine einzige Abfolge an steifen Protokollen und Traditionen, die sie entweder nicht mag oder einfach nur langweilig findet. Bei ihr hab ich mich von Anfang an gefragt, ob sie überhaupt selbst denken kann, auch wenn sie als überaus intelligente junge Frau dargestellt ist. Eine ausgesprochene Schönheit, aber für mich persönlich eine blasse Protagonistin.

Ihr jüngster Bruder Jeff ist ein ausgesprochener Charmeur. Ein leicht verschmitztes Lächeln und schon liegt ihm die Frauenwelt zu Füßen. Er kann tun und lassen was er will, ihm wird alles verziehen. Doch wenn es darum geht, Rückgrat zu zeigen, eine eigene Meinung zu haben und sich auch mal einer etwas heftigeren Debatte zu stellen, dann sieht man von dem Schönling nichts mehr.

Resultat

Ein solider Roman, der mich leider nicht ganz überzeugen konnte. Einerseits hat diese Geschichte eine schöne Prise Humor, auf der anderen Seite aber auch eine Steifheit, was einige Figuren als auch Teile der Handlung angeht, das mich irgendwann nur noch genervt hat. Von diesem Roman hab ich mir eindeutig mehr erwartet.
