Leichenblume by Anne Mette Hancock

My first read by the author. At first, when I saw it, I wasn´t much interested. The cover didn´t speak to me and it needed some of its Danish critics to make me curious enough to read the summary. A very promising summary, to be honest. Unfortunately, the thriller itself couldn´t hold up to it. But maybe the next book in this series?

Story

Heloise is surprised. A woman, who is not supposed to know anything from her past, has written her reveals that she knows things, nobody should know. But the information, she is now holding in her hands, show Heloise that she needs to act. And that she has now the great opportunity to solve a murder case the police isn´t successful in solving. But is that a wise thing to do? Is her reputation still strong and good enough to bring justice to the dead and tortured?

Style

This thriller has a brisk reading pace, a brisk style of speech, good dialogues, and a short and crisp writing style. Actually, everything that makes a successful thriller. Unfortunately, the build-up of tension is only moderate and thus takes an important part of the book. No question about it, the psychological component is there and provides some entertainment while reading and ensures that you stick with it. 

But I missed the nagging uncertainty I expect from a thriller that has this kind of psychological cat-and-mouse game. Sure, the main character Heloise combines cleverly and gradually gets on the track due to her attentive power of observation. But at the same time, I always had the impression that she lacked passion. Everything seemed almost indifferent. Emotionless. 

The background topic of child pornography and child abuse is presented here in a sensitive way, even if the author addresses things directly. The brutality behind it comes more and more to the fore and the fact that those who like it try to justify themselves in front of the other characters or to apologize in a poor way gave the story a completely different sound. 

Characters

The author has created characters in this thriller that are very different. On the one hand, that´s good, because it creates an interaction that provides variety. On the other hand, it also seems to be the case that evil gets away with everything it does and speaks. An arrogance is presented that is not always in harmony with the story. The author uses the cliché too easily and too much for the rich to do what they want without having to face consequences.

Heloise is a woman with a past. She carries a secret with her that is a great burden for her and makes many things impossible for her. At least from her point of view. If she didn´t have her best friend, with whom she can exchange ideas, again and again, she would have long been an emotional wreck. What I liked about the protagonist is the fact that she is very smart without boasting about it or holding it in front of everyone. She thinks first before she acts. She doesn´t just see one side and works by feeling. Even in those moments when she doesn´t trust her instincts. Unfortunately, Heloise also likes to isolate herself from her surroundings and fellow human beings and does not always have the best sense of human nature. 

Conclusion

I´m disappointed. This thriller couldn´t grab me or drag me into a fascination for the character or plot. Because of the promotion of this book, I expected a lot more from it. There are great approaches that just sadly have not been fully exploited. So, for me, unfortunately, just an average book. Too bad. Hopefully, the second volume is better.

Stil

Dieser Thriller hat ein zügiges Lesetempo, einen flotten Sprachstil, gute Dialoge und einen kurzen und knackigen Schreibstil. Eigentlich alles, was einen gelungenen Thriller ausmacht. Leider ist der Spannungsaufbau nur mäßig und nimmt dem Buch somit einen wichtigen Bestandteil. Keine Frage, die psychologische Komponente ist vorhanden und sorgt für einigermaßen Unterhaltung beim Lesen und dafür, dass man bei der Stange bleibt. 

Aber mir hat die nagende Ungewissheit gefehlt, die ich von einem Thriller erwarte, der diese Art von psychologischem Katz-und-Maus-Spiel hat. Sicher, die Hauptfigur Heloise kombiniert klug und kommt den Dingen aufgrund ihrer aufmerksamen Beobachtungsgabe nach und nach auf die Spur. Aber gleichzeitig hatte ich immer den Eindruck, dass ihr die Leidenschaft fehlt. Alles wirkte fast schon gleichmütig. Emotionslos. 

Das Hintergrundthema Kinderpornografie bzw. Kinderschändung wird hier auf feinfühlige Weise dargestellt, auch wenn die Autorin die Dinge direkt anspricht. Die Brutalität dahinter kommt immer mehr zum Vorschein und die Tatsache, dass diejenigen, die daran Gefallen haben, sich vor den anderen Figuren dafür versuchen zu rechtfertigen bzw. auf armselige Weise zu entschuldigen, gab der Geschichte einen ganz anderen Klang. 

Charaktere

Die Autorin hat in diesem Thriller Figuren erschaffen, die sehr unterschiedlich sind. Das ist einerseits gut, denn dadurch kommt ein Zusammenspiel zustande, das für Abwechslung sorgt. Auf der anderen Seite scheint es aber auch so zu sein, dass das Böse hier mit allem, was es tut und sagt, davonkommt. Da wird eine Arroganz präsentiert, die nicht immer im harmonischen Einklang mit der Geschichte steht. Die Autorin bedient mir hier zu leicht und zu viel das Klischee, das Reiche tun und lassen können, was sie wollen, ohne Konsequenzen tragen zu müssen. 

Heloise ist eine Frau mit Vergangenheit. Sie trägt ein Geheimnis mit sich herum, dass für sie eine große Belastung darstellt und ihr vieles unmöglich macht. Zumindest aus ihrer Sicht. Hätte sie nicht ihre beste Freundin, mit der sie sich immer wieder austauschen kann, sie wäre schon längst ein emotionales Wrack. Was mir an der Protagonistin gefiel, ist die Tatsache, dass sie sehr klug ist, ohne sich damit zu brüsten oder es jedem vor die Nase zu halten. Sie denkt zuerst nach, ehe sie handelt. Sie sieht nicht nur eine Seite und arbeitet nach Gefühl. Selbst in den Momenten, wo sie ihrem Instinkt nicht vertraut. Leider kapselt sich Heloise aber auch gerne von ihrer Umwelt und ihren Mitmenschen ab und hat in Sachen Menschenkenntnis nicht immer das beste Gespür. 

Resultat

Ich bin enttäuscht. Dieser Thriller konnte mich nicht packen oder in eine Faszination für die Figur oder Handlung hineinziehen. Aufgrund der Werbung für dieses Buch hatte ich mir viel mehr davon erwartet. Es sind großartige Ansätze vorhanden, die nur traurigerweise nicht voll ausgeschöpft wurden. Für mich daher leider nur ein durchschnittliches Buch. Schade. Hoffentlich ist der zweite Band besser.
