The Shape of Night is not the typical Tess Gerritsen thriller you expect when you know the author´s previous works. This one is kind of a gothic-paranormal suspense thriller that felt sometimes a bit weird to read. Nothing against a good suspense or a bit gothic flair in a book but in here it didn´t give me quite the chills, to be honest. Some pages had more of an absurd touch and reading through them felt strange. And yet I gave it a reading pleasure rating. Why? Keep reading and you will see.

Story
Ava is way overdue with her new cookbook. But a tragic event has kept her from writing and trying new recipes or better said incredibly old ones she found someplace. When she rents a house to get her work finished, she is surprised that the house seems to have a life of its own. But when she finds out that the house, she now lives in has some special passion in store for her, she starts to search for answers.
Style
Well, I admit it was a kind of reading pleasure. Not what I expected after knowing the author´s other books already. But this thriller is not what I would call nothing for the faint of heart. It would have taken some scary scenes to deserve such a label. Good, I admit that while reading some pages I was wondering where the story would lead and what the author was trying to tell her readers. Especially when she showed certain scenes and feelings that Ava had while experiencing all the things during her stay at Brodie´s Watch. Particularly during some nights.
Also, I felt that the first chapters had been oddly dull and somehow lifeless to read. Something I usually don´t experience while reading a Gerritsen book. That changed the moment the main character started asking questions, and the author began to create a certain tension through scenes with quick-witted dialogues and the corresponding actions of the characters involved. From then on, it became a real pleasure to read. Well, this ghostly or paranormal touch would not have been necessary for my eyes and some scenes seemed more ridiculous than scary to me. And I also wondered why the author needed two dark secrets to solve the murder case. But in the end, I couldn´t complain about how the murder was solved in the present. Okay, I wasn´t happy with the actual end of the thriller because it was too unsatisfactory for my taste. I would have liked a little more skill from the author here. Because she usually does that very well. But as already mentioned, all in all, I had my reading pleasure.
Characters
Ava drinks a lot of alcohol. Way too much. Good, she´s not drinking during the day, oh no. But the amount of liquid gold she consumes in the evening was even for me a bit too much. After one weak moment on New Year´s Eve, she did the unthinkable that led to a tragic accident. After that, her life is not the same anymore and she is having trouble getting done with her book. Her inner conflict is shown by Tess Gerritsen in a strong and yes, sometimes awkward way. She is a goddess at the stove and likes to try new things. And she wants background information about the house and town. The information she likes to use in her book. And when she meets the local doctor for the first time, she is wondering about him and kind of curious to get to know him a bit more.
Conclusion
This is no thriller combined with a romantic story. Yes, there is some passion for the ongoing plot but not what you might expect. And the solution Tess Gerritsen had to offer for some of the action in this thriller, was not really satisfying. At least not for me. Despite that, I had a good time reading it and was through it within one night. Sounds paradox? Some books only show their true potential in the second half of the plot and this book is such a book. At some point, it was great to see how the author was building up some tension and who the real evil guy had been.

Nun, zugegeben, es war eine Art Lesevergnügen. Nicht das, was ich erwartet hatte, nachdem ich die Autorin oder besser gesagt ihre Bücher nun schon einige Jahre kenne. Aber dieses Buch ist nicht das, was ich als nichts für schwache Nerven nennen würde. Es hätte einige wirklich gruseliger Szenen gebraucht, um ein solches Label zu verdienen. Gut, ich hab mich beim Lesen diverser Seiten gefragt, wohin die Geschichte führen würde und was die Autorin ihren Lesern mit ihren Worten sagen wollte. Besonders wenn sie bestimmte Szenen und Gefühle zeigte, die Ava hatte, als sie all die Dinge während ihres Aufenthalts in Brodie´s Watch erlebte. Besonders während mancher Nächte.
Außerdem hatte ich das Gefühl, dass die ersten Kapitel seltsam langweilig und irgendwie leblos zu lesen waren. Etwas, was ich normalerweise nicht erwarte, wenn ich ein Gerritsen Buch lese. Das änderte sich in dem Moment, als die Hauptfigur anfing, Fragen zu stellen, und die Autorin begann, eine gewisse Spannung durch Szenen mit schlagfertigen Dialogen und entsprechendem Agieren der jeweiligen involvierten Figuren zu schaffen. Von da an wurde es zum regelrechten Lesevergnügen. Gut, dieser geisterhafte bzw. paranormale Touch wäre in meinen Augen jetzt nicht nötig gewesen und einige Szenen kamen mir eher lächerlich als beängstigend vor. Und ich fragte mich auch, warum die Autorin zwei dunkle Geheimnisse brauchte, um den Mordfall zu lösen. Doch am Ende konnte ich mich nicht beschweren, wie der Mord in der Gegenwart aufgeklärt wurde. Okay, ich war nicht glücklich über das eigentliche Ende des Thrillers, weil das für meinen Geschmack zu unbefriedigend war. Da hätte ich mir etwas mehr Geschick von der Autorin gewünscht. Besonders im Hinblick darauf, dass sie das normalerweise ausgezeichnet beherrscht. Aber wie schon erwähnt, alles in allem hatte ich mein Lesevergnügen.
Charaktere
Ava trinkt viel Alkohol. Viel zu viel. Gut, sie trinkt nicht tagsüber, oh nein. Aber die Menge an flüssigem Gold, die sie abends konsumiert, war sogar mir etwas zu viel. Nach einem schwachen Moment am Silvesterabend tat sie das Undenkbare, was zu einem tragischen Unfall führte. Danach ist ihr Leben nicht mehr dasselbe und sie hat Probleme, mit ihrem Buch fertig zu werden. Ihr innerer Konflikt wird von Tess Gerritsen auf starke und ja, manchmal merkwürdige Weise gezeigt. Sie ist eine Göttin am Herd und probiert gerne neue Dinge aus. Und sie möchte Hintergrundinformationen über das Haus und die Geschichte der Stadt bekommen. Informationen, die sie gerne in ihren Büchern verwendet. Und als sie den örtlichen Arzt zum ersten Mal trifft, wundert sie sich über ihn und ist richtig neugierig ihn ein bisschen mehr kennenzulernen.
Resultat
Das ist kein Thriller kombiniert mit einer romantischen Geschichte. Ja, es gibt etwas Leidenschaft in der laufenden Handlung, aber nicht das, was man vielleicht erwartet hätte. Und die Lösung, die Tess Gerritsen für einen Teil der Action in diesem Thriller zu bieten hatte, war nicht wirklich zufriedenstellend. Zumindest nicht für mich. Trotzdem hatte ich eine gute Zeit mit dem Buch und war innerhalb einer Nacht fertig. Klingt paradox? Einige Bücher zeigen erst in der zweiten Hälfte der Handlung ihr wahres Potenzial und dieses Buch ist so ein Buch. Irgendwann war es großartig zu sehen, wie die Autorin Spannung aufbaute und wer der wahre Böse gewesen war.
