This is one of the books I was sneaking around for quite some time before it finally made its way from the library to my place. And after reading it, I know now why I wasn´t too eager to get my hands on it. The cover isn´t really mine but the story? Not what I´ve expected after reading the summary and for sure no book I would combine with the name Colleen Hoover. This story is one huge disappointment and nothing I can recommend to others.

Sloan will go through hell and back for those she loves. And she does, every single day. After finding herself stuck in a relationship with the dangerous and morally corrupt Asa Jackson, Sloan will do whatever it takes to get by until she's able to find a way out. Nothing will get in her way. Nothing except Carter. Sloan is the best thing to ever happen to Asa. And if you ask Asa, he'd say he's the best thing to ever happen to Sloan. Despite Sloan's disapproval of Asa's sinister lifestyle, he does exactly what he needs to do in order to stay a step ahead in his business. He also does exactly what he needs to do in order to stay a step ahead of Sloan. Nothing will get in his way. Nothing except Carter.
Story
Sloan lives in hell. Literally. Her boyfriend Asa is brutal doesn´t care if she wants to sleep with him or not. He takes what he wants when he wants it and that´s it. Period. And when Sloan finds out how he earns his money, she leaves him. And Asa is forced to come up with some plan to get her back and stay for good. A plan as sick as the brain behind it and for Sloan the moment she realizes that she is trapped. In a life, she never wanted and in a reality where courage and strength are no longer exist.
Style
The first half of the book was kind of entertaining and showed a main figure I could somehow understand and recognized as young, unexperienced in so many ways but still strong and smart. But when the author turned things around and the story became more and more unstructured, not to mention confused, I started to see the main figure as a woman I didn´t like nor did I have sympathy for. She found out what her boyfriend had done and with that, it seemed that she lost all her common sense, her smartness, and strength.
I didn´t recognize the author Colleen Hoover in here at all. The style is dark, towards the end the book is very unstructured, and it is not easy to follow the plot. The more I read, the more I became disappointed. And with the end, how the author solved everything, I wasn´t happy at all. What had started with some energy, action, and tension in it, turned into a joke with a very bad background and made it look like every criminal can escape justice and is only being held responsible by self-justice. Sorry, but that isn´t the way how things work.
Characters
Sloan was at first a young woman I liked to watch. She was in one hell of a bad situation and knew how she had to handle her boyfriend or what he liked to do. But the moment she found out that he wasn´t the man she thought he´d be, she should have left for good. Instead, she goes back and makes things worse. In the beginning, she was a really smart woman. Naïve but still smart. That changed after the second half and I found myself watching her with growing disbelief.
The author showed with Sloan an Image of woman I don´t like nor appreciate. Sure, Sloan fights a huge battle to get out of her situation, but she shows too clearly that she is a passive fighter. Her mind is screaming that she has to put her fist into his face to make him understand that “no” means “no” but all she does is laying still and do nothing. THAT is not how a woman should react when she´s being raped. No matter if it is her boyfriend who does it or a stranger.
Conclusion
I don´t like this novel. Not the way how the author created her main figure Sloan, nor how she writes about those who´ve been raped. And if you have some issues with rape, modern slavery or how some men think they can treat a woman, leave this novel alone. There are better books out there you will have good reading time with. This isn´t one of them.
Happy reading
