One of the books that had the pleasure that I took at some point the time to re-read it. Usually, I don´t have the time to do that, but Nora Roberts is one of the few authors – if not the only one – I am willing to do so from time to time. It is not only because of the style most of her older novels are written in, but some of them are now reissued and if it is a title I read many years ago, I simply can´t resist to get it now and read it again. It is always a wonderful experience to see how much I kept in mind when I read a book again, even after many years.

Marine archeologist Tate Beaumont has a passion for treasure-hunting. Over the years, she and her father have uncovered many fabulous riches, but one treasure has always eluded them: Angelique´s Curse – a jeweled amulet heavy with history, dark with legend, and tainted with blood. In order to find this precious artifact, the Beaumont´s reluctantly form a partnership with salvagers Buck and Matthew Lassiter. Having to share this dream is more than Tate can bear, but she has little choice. As the Beaumont´s and Lassiter´s pool their resources to locate Angelique´s Curse, the Caribbean waters darken with shadowy deceptions and hidden threats. Their partnership is placed in Jeopardy when Matthew refuses to share information – including the truth behind his father´s mysterious death several years earlier. For now, Tate and Matthew continue their uneasy alliance – until danger and desire begin to rise to the surface …
Story
Tate is grown up in a very well situated family. Her parents love her beyond anything and their great passion to dive for wrecks, discover things that have long been disappeared from the surface is something their daughter shares with her parents. When she meets Matthew, a young passionate diver himself and a few years older than she, she experiences for the first time in her life what love is. Only to discover very soon that love is painful, that not everything you dream of will become reality.

Style
The Reef is a novel in which her older style is still very much to see. Family goes beyond anything, loyalty is highly valued and true friendship means more than anything else. The author shows in this book what it means to get betrayed through the lack of experience and that not always everything a man does means he stopped loving the woman he did it for. The novel is set up in three parts. During the first one, the reader gets to know the characters, sees how they react with each other and how they cope when they have to get over a painful setback. In the second part, the story continues about eight years later and the reader gets to know bit by bit what had happened during those eight years. Part three finally shows the big finally between good and evil. Sometimes you don´t know for sure who belongs to which side, and there were a few scenes that were not quite logical and it got a bit jumpy, but in the end, the author delivers a wonderful happy end as she was supposed to do.

This book is written from a personal perspective and you get to know not only the thoughts of the main figures but also from others. But mainly the story is embossed by the acting and thinking of the main characters. Nora Roberts uses her soft style well-dosed when it comes to her novels as Nora Roberts and the reading speed is just perfect.

Characters
Big emotions are running high here. The naiveté of a young woman combined with the heat and affection of a young man. One comes from a well-situated background; the other has never known anything else but being a diver and treasure hunter.

Tate is roughly twenty when she meets Matthew for the first time. And the affection he has on her is not deniable. But very soon she has to learn the hard way that she obviously was completely wrong with her feelings. So she learns the lesson that love is dangerous and painful and very easy to betray.

Conclusion
A nice to read a novel. Not one of her best, no, but a nice read anyway. The Reef still provides some reading pleasure. So my result: very good to relax and turn off your brain for a little while.

Happy reading

Nora Roberts, born in Silver Spring, Maryland, is the #1 New York Times bestselling author of more than 200 novels. During the now-famous blizzard, she pulled out a pencil and notebook and began to write. It was there that a career was born. Several manuscripts and rejections later, her first book, Irish Thoroughbred, was published by Silhouette in 1981. Having spent her life surrounded by men, Ms. Roberts has a fairly good view of the workings of the male mind, which is a constant delight to her readers. It was, she’s been quoted as saying, a choice between figuring men out or running away screaming. Nora is a member of several writers groups and has won countless awards from her colleagues and the publishing industry. Recently The New Yorker called her “America’s favorite novelist.” She is also the author of the bestselling futuristic suspense series written under the pen name J. D. Robb. There are more than 500 million copies of her books in print.
